[Announcement] James Gunn's Online Workshop

...is back!

This is assuming that I can get together 5-8 participants who can attend.  The fee for this amazing online class is 200.00 (US) per attendee.  More information will follow, but until then, here is an exerpt from my communication with Prof. Gunn:

Tuition: 200.00/person
Attendees: About 6 is right, but I have dealt with a class of 7 or 8
Timing: The assignments last four weeks and then I give students four weeks to complete their story; I'll try to attach a description to this.
Frequency: I'm not sure how this differs from timing, but students are expected to complete an assignment each week and comment on other students' work for the first four weeks and then critique the stories during the final four weeks.
Reference Material: I recommend my Scarecrow Press book THE SCIENCE OF SCIENCE-FICTION WRITING, which also contains the syllabus for the on-line workshop.

More information will follow...

Please post if interested.  The ideal class size for him is 6 people (emails are hot and heavy, on par with the learning) and  I totally recommend it.  It the class I took years back, and now, it's back!  And, if more than the 6-8 people want this, Professor Gunn may - as he had when I took the course - set up another at a later time period.

Please feel free to link to this.  I only have a small group on my mutual friend list, and the widest coverage for this would come from everyone spreading the word.

Interested Potential Participants for next session:

1)  wishwords  (2nd)

2)  mgsmurf  (2nd)

3)  Will Morton  (2nd)

4)  ldragoon  (2nd)

5)  joycemocha  (2nd)
6)  dsmoen  (2nd)
7)  Whiskeychick  (2nd)
8)  laurie-gail  (2nd)
9)  david_de_beer  (2nd)
10)  liamstliam  (2nd)
11)  gsemones  (2nd)
12)  alyciachristine  (2nd)
13)  therinth  (2nd)
14)  musingoutloud (2nd)

Well, LJ edit didn't seem to like it when I user-named everyone.  Let's try this simpler.

Awesome! Count me in, Will.

Cool! I recommend it. It's been a highlight of my time learning the craft. And you get to rub elbows (figuratively, with online) with a Grand Master of the field!

My thought exactly. You can never know enough, and learning from The Master, would be awesome.

I would be interested, but would like more info about the class before I commit. What's the focus? How is it structured? When will it happen? That sort of thing.

ETA: And let me second that squee about learning from a master.

Mr. Gunn is getting that together for me now. I'll be posting an update with all that as soon as he gets it to me.

However, here is a summary exerpted from my communication with Mr. Gunn:

It sounds like a great class, and just what I need. However, I also need to be honest with myself and admit that this memoir is going to eat all my time for the next few months. It would be a bad thing to try and split my concentration between the two.

If he has another one in three months or so, please, please, please tell me about it. SF is my favorite genre, the hardest for me to write, and of course the one I want to write in.

I've seen him set up a couple consecutive sessions because of high interest. I'm thinking that is what might happen here, with an August one and an April one - if enough people show an interest. Pass the word - link this post or something!

It's something that has benefited me greatly.

Having been to Jim's workshop last summer in Kansas, I heartily recommend taking advantage of the opportunity to learn from Jim.

And as one who has taken the online, and set up two other online sessions, I can say that those who have taken the live class has my envy.

One day I'm hoping to make that. It's on my must-do wishlist.

You'd really like it. Not only the workshop, but all the Campbell Conference activities the weekend following the last day. Jim runs the workshop so well and Chris and Kij do such an excellent job with the conference that it's a joy to be there.

I'd love to be there in person, but this is the next best thing.

I strongly recommend this--anything that Prof Gunn runs like this. I took his on-line workshop in 2000, a year after I attended the workshop in Lawrence. Both were excellent. And he is really great to work with.

You know I'm interested. But truthfully couldn't do it until after December. Planning my wedding and managing my day job while doing so is just more important right now than the extra time and work required for something like a writers workshop.

Certainly let us know if there's a second round. I don't plan on any other drastic energy/time sucking activities after December.

Hey Will,

I was directed towards this workshop by a friend of mine [info]gwyndolin. Unfortunately, I won't be able to swing this workshop this year, but she mentioned you might also be doing a similar workshop next spring. I am very interested.

Years ago when I attended Prof Gunn ran them in August and April. I'll post the specifics when he gets back to me.

Thanks Will. I think this will be perfect. I was going to apply to Viable Paradise in September, but I'm getting married and the time I was going to use for that I'm using for the honeymoon.

Will, please add me to the list of those interested in taking the class.

I'll look over the syllabus, etc. tonight/tomorrow, and have to look at calendar, etc.

Hi there,

I found this via a link from [info]jaylake, and I'm interested in learning more about the workshop. :F I'll track down the syllabus meanwhile and have a look.

Cool, and the information you'll find in these posts! Let me know if you are interested, and I add to the list, When I get to 16 names, I'll be full for both August and Spring, and will close the recruitment then. Perhaps I will also want a couple in case people get hit with real life and pull out. We'll see how things go.

I'd be interested for spring. Unfortunately, September is when the Day Job starts for the year (I'm a special ed teacher), and while April/spring is also full of crazy, I'm in my routine for the year by then so the impact is not so great as it is during startup time.

(Also, I'm going to friend you if you don't mind--just a heads up).
